Geologist Sunil Jayaweera has recommended the establishment of rain water tanks as the best solution to the problem of floods affecting Colombo city. All major roads in Colombo city go under water and are flooded due to the limited land and space in the city. This results in the space available to absorb rain water becomes insufficient even after a light shower.
Jayaweera says that action should be taken to collect rain water coming from the roofs of every building in Colombo and store the water in a tank for future use.
Jayaweera also said that he would put forward this proposal through the media to the Defence Ministry, as rain water control was an essential requirement for the development of Colombo city and its environs.
