ශ්රී ලංකාවේ තෙල් හා ගෑස් පවතී දැයි සොයා බැලීම සඳහා කළ කැණීම්වල ප්රතිඵලයක් වශයෙන් ශ්රී ලංකාව සතු විශාල ගෑස් නිධියක් ඇති බවට ඊයේ දිනයේදී අදාළ කැණීම් සමාගම තමා වෙත දැන්වූ බව ජනාධිපති මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ මහතා මහනුවර ජනාධිපති මන්දිරයේදී පැවසීය.
මෙහිදී වැඩිදුරටත් ජනාධිපතිවරයා සඳහන් කළේ අදාළ තෙල් කැණීම් සමාගම් තෙල් හෝ ගෑස් හමුවුවහොත් දින තුනක් තුළ දී රජයට ඒ බව දැනුම් දීමට බැඳී සිටින බවත්, ඒ අනුව අදාළ කැණීම් සිදු කළ සමාගම එම සුබ ආරංචිය දැනුම් දුන් බවත්, එකී සුභ ආරංචිය මහනුවර ශ්රී දළදා සමිඳුන්ගේ ආශිර්වාදය මැද ජනතාවට දැන්වීමට ලැබීම ගැන ඉමහත් සතුටට පත්වන බවත්ය. එසේම තෙල් සඳහා කැණීම්ද මේ වනවිට ආරම්භ කර ඇති බවත්, නුදුරු අනාගතයේදීම ශ්රී ලංකාවෙන් තෙල් ලැබෙන බව තමා විශ්වාස කරන බවත් හෙතෙම පැවසීය.
මහනුවර ජනාධිපති මන්දිරයේදී ඊයේ (2 දා) මහනුවර නගර සභා කාර්ය මණ්ඩලය සහ සේවකයන් ඇතුළු පිරිසක් අමතමින් ජනාධිපතිවරයා මේ බව අනාවරණය කළේය.
දළදා සමිඳුන් වැඩ සිටින සිංහල, දෙමළ හා මුස්ලිම් සියලු ජනයා වෙසෙන මහනුවර රාජධානිය පිරිසිදු කර සංවර්ධනය කිරීමේ කාර්ය දැන් රජය අරඹා ඇති බවත්, මේ වනවිටත් මිලියන 3000 ක් වැය කරමින් නගර සංවර්ධනය රජය මගින් ආරම්භ කර ඇති බව කී ජනාධිපතිවරයා මේ ප්රදේශයේ පැල්පත්වාසීන්ගේ ප්රශ්න හොඳින් දන්නා බවත්, ඔවුන් අනිවාර්යයෙන්ම පැල්පතින් හොඳ නිවසකට යවන බවත් අවධාරණය කළේය.
අග්රාමාත්ය දි. මු. ජයරත්න, ක්රීඩා අමාත්ය මහින්දානන්ද අලුත්ගමගේ, මධ්යම පළාත් ප්රධාන අමාත්ය සරත් ඒකනායක යන මහත්වරුන්ද මෙම හමුව ඇමතූහ.
මෙම අවස්ථාව සඳහා මහනුවර එක්සත් ජනතා නිදහස් සන්ධානයේ මැති ඇමැතිවරු ඇතුළු විශාල පිරිසක් සහභාගි වූහ.

Exploration teams have found a large natural gas deposit in offshore waters within Sri Lanka, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday. The President made the announcement in Kandy where he addressed municipal workers at his official residence.
This is the first time the existence of a gas field in the country has been confirmed.
President Rajapaksa said that he was informed about the discovery by the exploration team while he was on his way to Kandy.
“While I was on my way to Kandy I received a very auspicious news early in the morning, that an exploration team had discovered a huge deposit of natural gas in the sea bed,” he said.
“I thought I should share and announce this good news in the presence of the Sacred Tooth Relic in this historic city of Kandy,” the President said.
President Rajapaksa also said that the second stage of the exploration had begun. The President said that Sri Lanka had started exploring for oil and gas from January this year. “With the blessings of the Dalada Wahanse, we would find oil as well,” he added.

Cairn India Limited yesterday on behalf of its local subsidiary confirmed the finding of gas in a well drilled in the Mannar Basin, the first well to make such a discovery in the country.
Earlier in the day President Rajapaksa announced the find to a gathering at the Kandy Presidential Residence and added the possibility of finding oil as well in the near future.
Petroleum industry sources said that the talk of finding oil was serious as Cairn had also reported finding in the same well "additional liquid hydrocarbon potential".
Cairn however put a caveat to their announcement by stating that "Further drilling will be required to establish the commerciality of the discovery"
The somewhat terse three paragraph statement issued by Cairn in making a positive find with its very first well spud in August and natural gas found last week, sources said was due to avoid accusations that it was attempting to drive up its parent company Cairn India’s share price. Cairn India is quoted in the Bombay Stock Exchange.
The company for its three well exploration in the Mannar basin has obtained the state-of-the-art Japanese fifth generation drilling vessel Chikyu (earth in Japanese) which is capable of drilling even in deep seas to a depth of 7000 metres into the core of the earth.
Sources however cautioned though hydrocarbons have been discovered in the very first well any commercial production would be at least six years away as there is a long process, where geologists will have to do much work figure out how best to get the gas/oil out in a feasible manner. Cairn is said to have already invested about US$100 million on the initial exploration.(RA)
