Bribery complaints can be sent by e-mail
The Commission to Investigate Allegations on Bribery and Corruption had received nearly 2,500 complaints of bribery for the period of May 2011 to January 15, 2012, Chairman of the commission and former Supreme Court Judge Justice Jagath Balapatabandi said yesterday.
"The commission has investigated 1,046 complaints and certain cases which do not fall under the purview of the Bribery Act were directed to the respective authorities," he said.
The commission has recently launched a programme enabling the public to make complaints of bribery, corruption and earning assets beyond one’s means, via e-mail.
"Accordingly, complaints can be forwarded to the commission using its e-mail address ciaboc@eureka.lk," Balapatabandi said.
According to the Chairman, the commission generally receives about 20 complaints a day. Since the end of the war the commission has started receiving a lot of complaints from the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
"In order to raise awareness among the residents of the Northern and Eastern provinces, the Commission is planning to carry out a series of awareness programmes with financial assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)," Balapatabandi said.
When the current commission was reconstituted in May 2011, there were 54 pending cases in the courts and 25 of them had been concluded," Balapatabandi said.
