GMSL news: Educational support for students of isolated Rajawigama Junior School of Puttalam

Rajawigama is a remote village attached to Karuwalagaswewa division of the Puttalam district. Majority of the villagers are farmers and they live with many hardships. Water scarcity has posed a significant challenge for the villagers; people heavily rely on seasonal monsoon rains. Elephant-human conflict is also a grave problem for farmers.

Rajawigama Junior School is the only school located in the village and conducts classes up to ordinary level examination. The school provides education for 500 students. Since parents do not have a proper income, they do not encourage students for education. Sunithya Lanka Foundation and the Green Movement are in operation in the village since 2010 on livelihood development and water scarcity related issues and came to know about this school through villagers.

In order to motivate students to engage in education it is planned to provide educational materials for students. Sri Lankan expatriate community in the United States of America, led by Mr. Bhakthi Liyanage and Ms. Himali Liyanage provided educational materials and the Green Movement helped to transport and distribute materials. In total, 238 students were provided educational materials. The students appreciated help given by both expatriate community and the Green Movement of Sri Lanka. Sunithya Foundation coordinated the programme successfully.
