FTZ worker claims Rs. 6 mn for loss of leg

A Free Trade Zone employee, who has lost the full use of his right leg, due to the shooting by the police that occurred at Katunayake on May 30, 2011, has filed a fundamental rights violation application in the Supreme Court seeking compensation in Rs. 6,000,000.

The petitioner is an employee of the Free Trade Zone, but did not participate in the protest rally. He was on his way to a bank. The protest, although peaceful, had been disrupted by the police.

Among the respondents are officers of Seeduwa, and Negombo police.

The petitioner is A. M. Dhammika Attanayake. The FTZ employees had protested against the move by the government to introduce a pension scheme to private sector employees.
