Use of plastic crates, a big success in Dambulla

The use of plastic crates at the Dedicated Economic Centre in Dambulla has been high. Dambulla, Dedicated Economic Centre's Manager (Development Section), Lasantha Sanjeewa told the Daily News that the use of plastic crates was made compulsory for eleven varieties of vegetables such as tomatoes, tibbatu, carrots, bittergourd, thumba karawila, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach, capsicum and cucumber.

He said that both vendors and transporters are using plastic crates to transport these eleven specified vegetables from the Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre to other parts of the country. Eventhough farmers are free to transport their produce from farms to the economic centres, most farmers who arrived at the Dedicated Economic Centre in Dambulla from many areas transport their vegetables using plastic crates.

"The government introduced this regulation to provide fresh and quality fruits and vegetables for consumers and provide a good price for farmers. Around 30 to 40 percent of fruits and vegetables go waste due to improper transportation.

'This results in a loss of around Rs 20 billion annually," he said.

'This regulation will not affect people who transport vegetables or fruits to their homes in three-wheelers and hand tractors.

'Only the large-scale fruit and vegetable transporting vehicles will come under probe, he said.
