Over 300 acres of forest cover was destroyed by a fire which erupted in Keerthi Bandarapura in Walapane yesterday, Nuwara Eliya Government Agent D.P.G.Kumarasiri said.
He said that attempts by the Walapane police to extinguish the fire with the assistance of the residents in the area failed and the assistance of the SLAF had been sought.
"The dry weather prevailing in the area for some time caused the fire to spread fast to other areas," he said.
The Wild Life authorities, Agrarian Services Director S. M. Chandrasena, Disaster Management Department and the Civil Aviation authorities have been informed about the disaster, the Government Agent said.
