එදා අගමැතිවරයා හැදූ පාර විවෘත කරන්නටත් කොටි ත්‍රස්තවාදීන්ගෙන් අවසර ගන්නට වූ රටේ අද කිසිවකුගේ අවසරයක් නැතිව අධිවේගී මාර්ග සදමින් රට අධිවේගී සංවර්ධනයකට රැගෙන යන බව ජනාධිපති මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ මහතා පැවැසීය.

අධිවේගී මාර්ග තැනීම නිසා අප එකම රටක්ය යන හැඟීම උතුරේත් දකුණේත් ජනතාවට ලැබෙන බව සඳහන් කළ ජනාධිපතිවරයා බෙදුම්වාදයටත් ත්‍රස්තවාදයටත් හොඳම පිළිතුර අධිවේගී මාර්ග ඉදි කිරීම බව පෙන්වා දුන්නේය.

වේගයත් කාර්යක්ෂමතාවත්, පහසුවත් ජනතාවට උරුම කර දෙමින් අප රට අසාර්ථක රාජ්‍යයක් නොවන බව පිටරටවල යමින් අපට අසාර්ථක චෝදනා නඟන අයට පෙන්වා දී තිබෙනවා යැයි ජනාධිපතිවරයා අවධාරණය කළේය.

ජනාධිපති මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ මහතා මේ අදහස් පළ කළේ දක්ෂිණ අධිවේගී මාර්ගය විවෘත කිරීමෙන් අනතුරුව කරන්දෙණිය ටී. ඩී. සමරවීර ක්‍රීඩාංගණයේ පැවැති ජනහමුවට ඊයේ (27) එක්වෙමිනි.

ශ්‍රී ලංකා ජාතියට තවදුරටත් හීන දකිමින් ජීවත්වෙන්නට ඉඩ නොතබන බව ජනාධිපති මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ මහතා මෙහිදී අවධාරණය කළේය. අද දිනය ශ්‍රී ලංකා මහා මාර්ග වංශ කතාවට නවීනත්වය ගෙන ආ දවසක් බවත් රටේ දිළිඳුකම තුරන් කරන්නටත්, අධිවේගී මාර්ගය උපයෝගි කරගත හැකි බවත් ජනාධිපතිවරයා පෙන්වා දුන්නේය. මේ වසරේ පමණක් සංචාරකයන් 7,50,000ක් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට පැමිණ ඇති බවත් සංචාරක කර්මාන්තය ගොඩනඟන්නට මේ මාර්ගය ආශිර්වාදයක් වනු ඇති බවත් ජනාධිපතිවරයා සඳහන් කළේය.

අධිවේගී මාර්ගය හේතුවෙන් රටේ නිෂ්පාදනය කෙටි කාලයක් තුළ එහා මෙහා ගෙනියන්නට හැකිවන හෙයින් කොළඹට කේන්ද්‍රවී පවතින රටේ කර්මාන්ත ඈත පළාත්වලට විහිදෙන බවත්, ඉන් රටේ තරුණ තරුණියන්ට රැකියා අවස්ථා උදාවනු ඇති බවත් මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ මහතා පැවැසීය.

අද උතුරේ සිට කොළඹට එන්නට පැය 7ක් පමණ යන බවත් අනාගතයේ දී යාපනය-කොළඹ පැය 2න් 3න් යන්නට එන්නට අධිවේගී මාර්ග නිසා හැකිවෙන බවත් ජනාධිපතිවරයා සඳහන් කළේය.

ඉතා සුළු කාලයක් තුළ එහා මෙහා යන්නට හැකිවන විට රටෙන් වෙනම කෑලි කඩාගන්නට කෙනකුට නොසිතෙනු ඇති බවත් මෙය එකම මාතෘ භූමියක් බව වඩ වඩාත් තහවුරු වනු ඇති බවත් ඔහු පැවසීය. කොළඹ-කටුනායක දක්වා අධිවේගී මාර්ගය තැනීමේ කටයුතු 2013 වන විට අවසන් කරන බවට ද ජනාධිපතිවරයා විශ්වාසය පළ කළේය.පාරවල් වසන්නට වසන්නට බෙදුම්වාදය පෝෂණය වන බවත්, පාරවල් හැදෙන්නට හැදෙන්නට එකාවන්ව නැඟීසිටින්නට අවස්ථාව උදාවන බවත් ජනාධිපතිවරයා වැඩිදුරටත් පැවසීය.

මහා සංඝරත්නය ප්‍රමුඛ අන්‍යාගමික නායකයන් සහ දෙස් විදෙස් තානාපතිවරු, මැති ඇමැතිවරු, රාජ්‍ය නිලධාරීහු මහ ජනතාව විශාල පිරිසක් ද මේ අවස්ථාවට සහභාගිව සිටියහ.

අපි හැමදාමත් නූතන ජාතියක්‌, දේශයක්‌ පිළිබඳ කතා කරනවා. නමුත් නූතනත්වයේ අධිවේගී මඟට රට හැරවූ දිනය අද යෑයි ජනාධිපති මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා ඊයේ (27 වැනිදා) පැවසීය. ජනාධිපතිවරයා මේ බව සඳහන් කළේ දක්‍ෂිණ අධිවේගී මාර්ගය විවෘත කිරීමෙන් අනතුරුව කරන්දෙනිය, ටී. ඩී. සමරවීර ක්‍රීඩාංගණයේ පැවැති ජනහමුව අමතමිනි.

මෙතෙක්‌ ශ්‍රී ලාංකික ජාතිය සතුව නොතිබුණු සම්පතක්‌ ගොඩනඟා ජාතිය සතු කළ දවසක්‌ වගේම අලුත් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවක්‌ ගොඩනඟන බවට අප දුන් පොරොන්දුව ඒ ආකාරයෙන් ඉටුකළ දිනයක්‌ බව සඳහන් කළ හැකි බවත්, ජනාධිපතිවරයා මෙහිදී වැඩිදුරටත් පැවසීය.

ශ්‍රී ලාංකීය ජාතියට සිහින දැක දැක ජීවත්වන්න ඉඩ තබන්නේ නැති බවත් අනාගත පරපුරට ලෝකයේ දියුණු රටවලට ගොස්‌ ඒ රටවල දියුණුව දැක මේ රටට ඇවිත් හූල්ලමින් සිටීමට ඉඩ තබන්නේ නැති බවත් ජනාධිපතිවරයා පැවසීය.

මෙවැනි මාර්ග ඉදිකිරීමෙන් අපේ ජනතාවගේ මනස හැඩගැස්‌වෙනවා වගේම, අනාගතයේදී යාපනය - කොළඹ ළංවී රට බෙදන ප්‍රශ්න පැනනගින්නේ නැහැ යෑයි ද ජනාධිපතිවරයා පැවසීය.

President at ‘Gateway to Wonder’ launch: Efficient road network, pathway to peace

Sri Lanka’s first Expressway - the Southern Expressway - the ‘Gateway to Wonder’, would open a world of new opportunities for Sri Lankans in the tranquillity of peace. The best solution to petty separatism and ethnic divisions is to have closer links among people through an efficient road network, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday.

The President speaking at a public gathering in Karandeniya after declaring open the Expressway stressed that close connectivity through roads would strengthen unity and spur development. “Sri Lanka has turned a new leaf in its road development history, a turn towards the modernization of its road network in line with the best global practices,” the President said. He said that the government plans to link all areas of the country through an Expressway network and called it a revolution in road development.

The President noted that roads reducing travel time between areas could act as a catalyst for closer links between communities, people and added that this would spur unity and prevent any division within the country.

The President also said that the time when such things were a dream was over and added that this was the moment when dreams come true for Sri Lankans.

Addressing the massive gathering he said: “Today is a very important day in the country’s history. It is a day we acquired a treasure we did not possess earlier.”

“On the other hand, it is another step in our promise to build a new and prosperous Sri Lanka,” he said. The President also pointed out to the gathering that Sri Lanka did not have such a bright future a few years back.

“When I was the Prime Minister and also in charge of road development, the people requested me to rebuild the ruined road to the Madhu Church.

I repaired the road and later the Bishop also invited me for the opening.” “However, later the Bishop told me that I have to get permission from the LTTE to travel to Madhu. I totally refused this and told at the time that I would travel to Madhu in the near future but without permission from anyone. This is the type of past we had,” he said.

The President said that soon there would be an Expressway linking Jaffna to Colombo via the A-9 and another from Colombo to Kandy. The Katunayake to Colombo Expressway would be vested with the public at the end of 2012, he added. He noted that the time when the country’s youth dreamt about such facilities in developed countries was over and added that Sri Lanka would also have facilities equal to developed nations, in the near future.

“I have no doubt that this Expressway would show the path of prosperity for our future generations,” he added.

The President also said that the Expressway would help to promote the whole of South as an investment village and a tourist hub.

He told the country’s youth to be prepared to enjoy the income earning opportunities arising out of this massive development drive. He told them to equip themselves with the necessary skills and knowledge to reap dividends arising from these opportunities. The Expressway would be extended to the Mattala International Airport and would also encompass the Hambantota harbour, he added.

The President also urged the private sector to play a more proactive role in this development-friendly environment and supplement the state sector, to take Sri Lanka to greater heights.

The event was attended by ministers, politicians and the public.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday declared that the rapid development of the road network in the post-war era was part of his government’s strategy to counter those still pursuing a separatist agenda.

President Rajapaksa assured that the existing A9 road to Jaffna would be transformed into a highway to facilitate overland movement to and from the Jaffna peninsula. The government was in the process of finalizing the Colombo-Jaffna highway project, the President said.


Addressing a gathering at Karandeniya, after commissioning the newly-built southern expresswa (E01) which connects Kottawa with Galle, President recalled how a section of the international community and their local agents had categorized Sri Lanka as a failed State.

The government had proved them wrong, President Rajapaksa said. The rapid post-war recovery and development progress had demonstrated Sri Lanka’s capabilities and exposed its detractors.

Commenting on the challenges faced by the country, the President said that the government was striving to overcome threats posed by racism, provincial level conflicts and separatism.

The President said that the southern highway was an important milestone in Sri Lanka’s history.

Recalling the attacks the LTTE used to mount during the last week of November before the conclusion of war in May 2009, President Rajapaksa said that parents refrained from sending children to schools. He asked the audience whether anyone could remember the name of the event the LTTE celebrated towards the end of November. Many shouted, ‘Mahavir Day’. President refrained from mentioning the event.

President Rajapaksa said that the government of yore had gone to the extent of broadcasting the LTTE’s so-called policy speech to the entire world in November. But, today the people rejoiced at the opening of new highway, he said.

The President said time was when the LTTE had been allowed to operate as it pleased. The President said: "Let me tell you an incident during my tenure as the Prime Minister. As I also handled the road development, I was requested to build a road to the Madhu Church. I took action to construct a 40-foot-wide road. Having invited me to the opening ceremony, the Bishop of Mannar told me that though I could attend the function, they had to take permission from the LTTE. I was also told that my armed bodyguards couldn’t accompany me. I neither obtained permission from the terrorists nor attended the ceremony. I told myself that I would visit Madhu one day without begging for anyone’s permission."

The 57 Division captured Madhu in late April 2008—the first major success on the Vanni front since the commencement of the government’s military campaign in Sept. 2007.

President said that whatever Sri Lanka’s critics said that his government had realized many post-independence dreams of the Sri Lankans. The new highway, coupled with a range of development projects now taking place in the Southern Province would spearhead Sri Lanka’s development, he said. The new port at Hambantota and the proposed Mattala international airport would change the life of the Southerners, the President said, adding that the government was going ahead with its plans to develop the provinces as well as the urban centres.

The President said that the rapid expansion of the road network and ongoing mega development projects would help his government tackle unemployment.
