Dengue looms with arrival of rains

The Health Ministry Epidemiology Unit requested the public to take precautions against dengue which is rising its head once again, with heavy rains over the island.

It was revealed that during the last 11 months 22,926 suspected dengue cases and 163 deaths were reported from all over the island. The unit said that 57.44 percent of dengue cases were reported from the Western Province.

Last month, 2,059 dengue cases were reported while over 1,070 dengue cases were reported this month.

The unit observed that this number could rise with the weather pattern that is being currently experienced. Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy and Batticaloa have recorded the highest number of dengue cases.

The Ministry requested the public to take steps for the regular removal of possible mosquito breeding sites.

It also advised to seek prompt medical treatment in the event of fever.
