President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Prime Minister D.M Jayaratne will be able to travel for free along the southern expressway after it opens to the public from today.
When The Sunday Leader queried from the Road Development Authority (RDA) southern expressway project Director D.M Chandrasiri, he said that all VIPs including government ministers and parliamentarians must pay to use the expressway.
However he said the President and Prime Minister will be exempted. Meanwhile the Green Movement (Haritha Viyaparaya) claimed that there are environmental concerns over the expressway.
Coordinator of the Haritha Viyaparaya, Banduranga Kariyawasam said that stray and wild animals may attempt to cross the road and will get caught to speeding vehicles.
He said that there was a need to erect high fences around the highway to prevent animals from nearby villagers and thickets crossing.
However Chandrasiri insisted that there was no need to erect fences at this point.
