The Batticaloa Electrical Engineering Division said that 66 electricity projects have been established in the Batticaloa district during this year, spending over Rs. 679 million. They have established 42 transformers in these electricity projects. The government will inaugurate another 26 electricity projects next year.
According to Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, they have established 10 electricity projects under the Nagenahira Navodaya programme, 20 projects under the Immediate Rural Electrification programme and another 14 rural electrification projects. All these projects and 79 electricity extensions are being worked out successfully covering all divisional secretariat divisions in the Batticaloa district, the minister said, participating at a special meeting held in Batticaloa district during an inspection tour in the Eastern province.
The electricity supply which is 70 percent of the electricity demand in the Batticaloa district will be increased to meet the full demand within next year.
The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) had provided electricity to 103,096 families in the Batticaloa district and they are to supply electricity to another 5,832 families through the above projects to uplift the livelihoods of the Batticaloa district community.
The CEB hopes to develop social and economic activities of these families as well. The government has allocated Rs. 1,588 million on these projects. The Power and Energy Ministry stated that all measures are in place to complete all these projects before the end of next year.
Batticaloa district GA Arunai Nayakam, Eastern Provincial Power and Energy Minister Udumar Lebbai, Cooperatives and Internal Trade Deputy Minister Basher Sign Dawood, a number of politicians and heads of public and private institutions in the Eastern province too participated in the meeting.
