Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Special Investigation Unit officials collected nearly Rs 330 million as fines from illegal power tappers during operations carried out throughout the island from July 2010 to October 2011. The CEB has increased its income by Rs 100 million during this period.
Around 8,542 persons have been taken into custody for power piracy. A majority of the cases have been reported from Northern and Eastern Provinces.
Around 6,340 cases related to tapping transmission lines using hooks, while others were related to manipulation of electricity meters. These raids were conducted by the CEB Special Investigation Unit on a directive by Power Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka.The Special Investigation Unit has been strengthened to conduct raids.
The minister had appointed nine investigation teams and investigations are carried out islandwide. The Power and Energy Ministry ordered strict action against power trappers during the New Year and that measures should be in place to reduce incidents of power piracy.
