Over Rs 21,000 m allocated to provide water for Jaffna

Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardana said that after 70 years, the government has allocated over Rs 21,000 million to provide purified water to the Jaffna peninsula from the Iranamadu reservoir.

Around 689,000 individuals will benefit from this project.

Apart from that, clearing the drainage water system of Jaffna also has been included in this project.

The minister was addressing a press conference at the Information Department in Narahenpita yesterday.

Under this project the Ministry has drawn up a plan to distribute purified tube water throughout the Jaffna peninsular, he said.

Further, the minister said that, Rs 29,000 million had been allocated for the Water Supply and Drainage Ministry from the budget of year 2011.

This amount has been increased to Rs 33,000 million for 2012.

The ministry has drawn up a four year plan by allocating Rs 164 billion for this purpose.

The ministry has also drawn up a plan to commence 100, small scale and medium scale water supply projects throughout the country, he said. Around three million individuals will benefit under 3700 community Based water supply projects throughout the country, he said.

Water Supply and Drainage Ministry Secretary Amarananda Abegunasekera and Water Supply and Drainage Board chairman Karunasena Hettiarachchi also participated in the press conference.
