The Norachcholai Power Plant or Lak Wijaya Plant didn’t have the necessary protection required for a plant of its nature, senior officials of the Ceylon Electricity Board said.
They said normal installations in the 300MW Plant too were not in proper order. "So, there is always the tendency for a fire to break out," they added.
A third fire broke out at the Norochcholai coal power plant On Monday night.
Power and Energy Ministry officials told The Island yesterday morning that there was no serious damage, but as a temporary measure the coal crushing machine was shut down. The Ministry ruled out the possibility of sabotage.
The plant would resume generating electricity within hours, the official said.
According to sources at the plant, the fire broke out in a boiler room and a stock of coal had also caught fire. The fire was subsequently brought under control. There was no major damage from the blaze.
Several minor fires too had erupted at the power plant since it was commissioned last year, they said.
On November 29, due to an internal fire inside the coal crushing machine, at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant, the plant has been temporarily shut down.
However, in that instances too there were no major damages reported and power supply was restored within a few hours.
