The Ministry of Economic Development has allocated Rs. 330 million to uplift the infrastructure facilities of the estates in the Nuwara Eliya district under the Gama Neguma programme an official from the District Secretariat said.
"The funds have been allocated in mid November and the officials are drawing up plans to effectively utilize it," Additional District Secretary, Mrs. Mallika Amarasekara said.
She said the District Secretariat had sought opinions of the MPs representing the district on how to utilize those allocations. Currently the officials had received opinions of nearly five MPs and their proposals had been forwarded to relevant officials to carry them out.
Utilizing those funds the estate road network would be upgraded and the District Secretariat was also planning to initiate projects to construct bridges, upgrade hydro electric plants and other infrastructural needs.
Furthermore the Planning Director of the Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat, Mrs. W.A.H Wijerathne said that they had upgraded 26 pre schools and all the maternity clinics in the district under the Gama Neguma project initiated by the government.
"We have also sought permission from the government to initiate a project to upgrade selected cottage industries in the district under Divi Neguma project," she said.
