Tax concessions for imported machinery and equipment for the livestock industry benefit only the large scale industrialists and the small scale poultry farmers are getting gradually driven out of the market, poultry farmers complain.
A spokesman for the small scale poultry industrialists told The Island that they had not received any concessions from Budget 2012, but the large scale industrialists had been given various benefits, including the import of freezer trucks, incubators etc, which the small scale farmers could not afford.
He said the small scale farmers had to compete with those who benefited from tax concessions. About 60 percent of the poultry industry was controlled by large scale industrialists and they would form a cartel after grabbing the whole market, he warned.
Chicken at Rs. 350 a kilo (with skin) is not available freely in the market as traders are selling skinless chicken at higher prices.
The President of the All Island Poultry Association (AIPA) Dr. D. D. Wanasinghe declined to comment.
