Speaker directs Aluthgamage: Check if land takeover for H’tota sports village will affect farmers

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa instructed Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage to take action to assert whether the agriculture and irrigation works in Hambantota would be negatively affected by the acquiring of lands to build a sports village near the Sooriyawewa Cricket Stadium.

The Speaker gave this direction when the Minister was responding to a question raised by the UNP Matara District MP Buddhika Pathirana, during the oral questions session.

Minister Aluthgamage promised to discuss the issue with the ministry officials and let the Speaker know whether the proposed Sports Village would cause any losses to the farmers in the district, through land loss or by affecting the irrigation network.

Asked by the MP whether 5,000 acres have been taken over by the government for this purpose, the minister said that the project would need only 1,435 acres. If the farmers are affected then they would be compensated and action would be taken to provide alternate lands for them, the minister said. (SI)
