Several development projects have been initiated in the Wilpattu National Park, to attract more tourists, coinciding with 2012 Deyata Kirula development programme.
The construction of a 100 kilometre new internal road network to enable visitors to reach historic monuments and to see wildlife, demarcation of tourist camp sites along the banks of Kalaoya and Modaragam Aru Oya extending, to 10 acres each, construction of five new fully equipped tourist resorts and constructing two new entrances at Mahawilachchiya and Thantirimale are among the main projects.
"The construction of the 15 kilometres new internal road network has been completed and the construction of two new entrances are nearing completion.
At the new tourist camp sites, tourist groups will be accommodated in temporary camps where they will be able to enjoy wildlife and natural beauty at a reasonable rate. Campers will be provided with security, water and sanitation, cooking facilities etc in the jungle.
There will be normal and luxury camp sites Agrarian services and wildlife minister S.M. Chndrasena said. The Minister said the development programmes will cost around Rs. 1,000 million.
The Minister told the Daily News that plans are under-way to establish two wild elephant holding grounds gat Horowpothana in Anurahdpaura district and at Galgamuwa in the Kurunegala district in connection with the Deyata Kirula 2012 programme.
"These two elephant holding sides, consists 3,000 acres of forest land each. Phase one of the project will cost Rs 500 million. Violent elephants will be shifted to these centres for rehabilitation as a remedial step to minimize the increasing human elephant conflict," Chandrasena said.
