No room to criticise solid waste management – Yapa

By Ifham Nizam

Waste management will be done according to international standards and there will not be room for anybody to criticize it, says Environment Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa.

He said that Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) was supporting the Pilisaru project to set up sanitary pits in selected locations.

He says experts were consulted prior to the initiative of waste management projects in the country.

Yapa said that committees would be appointed to monitor waste management at local government level.

He said that there are over 200 local government bodies that have joined the Central Environment Authority’s waste management project, Pilisaru.

Yapa said that these committees would be established at Divisional Secretariat level and would include members from the Samurdhi and other rural associations in the respective areas.

According to Yapa, these committees are to be provided with financial assistance and equipment to carry out the work through the Divisional Secretariats.

Rs. 5 billion has been allocated for the Pilisaru project this year through the 2012 budget.

The Minister added that a countrywide awareness campaign would also be carried out to ensure effective solid waste management.
