About ten thousand people in the country were diagnosed with tuberculosis annually and a great number of them died each year after suffering for long periods, but not much attention was given to the illness compared to the attention given to a disease like dengue, Director of Tuberculosis Control Programme, Dr. A. K. S. B. de Alwis said recently.
Addressing a ceremony to launch a software solution for the National Programme for Tuberculosis Control and Chest Diseases (NPTCCD) of the Ministry of Health at the Medical Research Institute Auditorium recently, Dr. Alwis said that time had come for society to give more attention to the illness since it was beyond NPTCCD control to eliminate it.
The particular software launched at the ceremony would enable the integration of all information of the 28 TB clinics and four laboratories spread all over the country using the net. The main feature of the software was the possibility of accessing all information about all tuberculosis patients in Sri Lanka and the systematic administration and monitoring of them through a singular network. The software enables the obtaining of all the information about medical reports and medicines that are issued to the tuberculosis patients by entering the National Identity Card Number. It also has the capability of producing reports about the percentage of the illness that is cured through medicine, he said.
The software was produced by the Department of web technology Research and Development of IJTS (Java Institute). A special factor of the software was that AJAX technology and Cloud Computer technology, which were two of the most powerful technologies in the world, were used in the creation of the software. Furthermore, it was possible to save a vast sum of foreign exchange as free and open source software were used in its production.
Director of the IJTS institute, Dr. Ishantha Siribaddana, who produced the software said that it was the first time that a national software was created for the Sri Lankan Health Service sector.
Director of Tuberculosis Control Movement Dr. Alwis presided at the event and a vast number of people including, Dr. Mrs. Supriya Warusavithana of the World Health Organization, Director General of the Health Department, Dr. Ajith Mendis, Assistant Director, Sarath Chandrasiri Vithana, the Director of the Information Technology of the Health Department, Dr. S. R. U. Wimalarathna, and Assistant Director of the Tuberculosis Control Movement Sudath Samaraweera were present.
