The government has allocated Rs 100 million to introduce a new insurance scheme for farmers facing the threat of elephants, Agrarian Services and Wildlife Minister S M Chandrasena said.
The Agricultural Insurance Board on the request of the Wildlife and Agrarian Services Ministry and the Wildlife Conservation Department will introduce the new insurance scheme for farmers facing the human - elephant conflict.
Agricultural Insurance Board chairperson Sumana Ariyadasa said this will be implemented from next year.
Measures will be taken to conserve the elephant population under this programme, Ariyadasa said.
"The new insurance scheme will be implemented as a participatory insurance scheme. Farmers who wish to benefit from this scheme have to pay a small subscription fee," she said.
Four areas are covered under the new insurance scheme. Lives, property, rice - maize and banana - papaw cultivation will be protected under this scheme.
Farmers threatened by elephants can be subscribe to this insurance scheme under the package of their choice, she said.
