The price control on pharmaceutical drugs will definitely be implemented from January despite opposition to this move, said Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena. He said that there had been a price control on drugs until 2002. “The then UNP regime cancelled this by a special gazette and some drug producers executed this to exploit the public.
Drug producers earn a profit of 60 percent to 75 percent at present from their sales,” Sirisena said.
The minister said that the same drug is sold in pharmacies under different brand names at various prices. “Even though doctors prescribe medicine in generic names, private pharmacies issue expensive medicine under various brand names because of the commission they receive”.
