Galle canned fish factory commences production on April 3

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa

The first fish canning factory of Sri Lanka will be opened in Galle next Tuesday (April 3). The factory has been completed at a cost of Rs. 84 million as a joint venture between the Sri Lanka Fisheries Corporation and a private institution.

The factory has a capacity of producing 10,000 cans of fish per day and it will be increased to 20,000 in the future, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said.

In addition to the Galle Fish Canning Factory, 2 more fish canning factories will be established in Peliyagoda and Mundalama as soon as possible, Dr. Senaratne said.

With the production of canned fish locally a considerable amount of foreign exchange spent on its import could be saved, he said. As Sri Lanka had sufficient fish resources, the country could be self-sufficient in canned fish in the near future.

Meanwhile Senaratne also said that Construction of fisheries harbours, anchorages and fish landing centres along the coastal belt would be completed by the end of 2013.

The Ministry had taken steps to complete the construction of the Mannar and Gandara fisheries harbours at the end of this year and would also build another six, including the Dodanduwa fisheries harbour soon, Dr. Senaratne said.

The fisheries industry could contribute 24 percent to the country’s economy in this year and it could increase to 50 percent by 2013. The fisheries industry would become the leading contributor to the Sri Lankan economy within the next two years, he added.
