Seventy eight instructors in traditional handicrafts

The National Craft Council has selected 78 craftsmen and craftswomen as instructors in traditional handicrafts,for the year 2012, a National Craft Council spokesman said.

"The awards ceremony to present appointment letters to these craftsmen and women will be held at the Janakala Kendraya in Battaramulla at 10 am today under the patronage of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Minister Douglas Devananda and with the participation of Deputy Minister Weerakumara Dissanayake", he said.

"These training courses will be held under the 17 selected handy craft sectors", he said. Attention will be paid on sectors, such as, Lacer, Sesath, Hana arts, Gok arts, metal and Silver ornaments,Pankola, cane, wood carving, wood sculptures and sea shells.The training courses will mainly focus on producing handicrafts by using local materials", he said.

"Around 700 students will be trained under this programme during 2012. Each training programme which is six months in duration will provide self employment opportunities for those who successfully complete them", he said.
