Firewood taboo for Poson dansalas

Kithsiri Wanasinghe and Sampath Sanjeewa

Ruwanweli Cetiyaramadhipathi Ven Pallegama Hemaratana Thera requested the Poson Festivities Committee to prohibit the conducting of danselas using firewood for cooking in the areas between the Sri Maha Bodhi and Ruwanweli Seya premises this Poson season.

Ven Hemaratana Thera made this request when the Poson Festivities Committee held its first meeting at the Anuradhapura District Secretariat on March 16. Government Agent Mahinda Seneviratne presided.

The thera said several danselas using firewood were held in this area last year and the smoke emanating from their fireplaces caused environmental problems and threatened the valuable artifacts in the region.

He also said that it was the view of the Maha Sangha that the Poson festivities should be conducted in a deeply religious theme without giving prominence to commercialism. He said that commercial advertising in the sacred area should be conducted in a subdued manner to give to the spiritual aspect of the festivities. Persons and institutions hoping to conduct danselas in Anuradhapura during the Poson season should forward their applications to the Municipal Commissioner. The location of the danselas should also be stated in the application which will be submitted to the Poson Festivities Committees for approval.
