In order to further strengthen paddy purchasing, the Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade, Johnston Fernando, has directed the Chairman of the Paddy Marketing Board K. B. Jayasinghe to utilize the services of Agriculture and Agrarian Services officers.

Minister Fernando told The Island that those officers will be temporarily attached to the PMB after discussions with Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene and Minister of Agrarian Services and Wild Life S. M. Chandrasena.

He said that Ministers Abeywardene and Chandrasena had agreed to release them to the PMB and they will be assisted by members of the Civil Defence Force.

Minister Fernando also said that he had instructed the PMB to inform the Secretary of the Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Sunil Sirisena if there were any problems regarding the availability of lorries to transport paddy. He had also called for a report from the PMB about any difficulties the farmers faced and in purchasing paddy.

Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando directed Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) chairman K.B.Jayasinghe to get the service of Agrarian Services Officers and Agricultural Extension Officers to strengthen the paddy purchasing process from farmers islandwide.

Minister Fernando said that he had discussed with Agricultural Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene and Agrarian Services and Wildlife Minister S.M.Chandrasena the possibility of incorporating Agrarian Services Officers and Agricultural Extension Officers to the PMB on a temporary basis.

"The ministers agreed to release the officers on temporary basis to engage in the paddy purchasing process from farmers countrywide," the minister said.

Minister Fernando has also instructed the PMB chairman to take action against those who are involved in giving false information maliciously to farmers on the government's paddy purchasing programme.

He said that action has been taken to send more lorries to paddy purchasing centres where transport shortages are reported.
