Thirty six persons were arrested by the Police Special Task Force for engaging in illegal sand mining during the last 48 hours. The STF also seized 10 cubes of illegally mined sand, and 11 tractors and 2 tippers along with a large stock of implements used for mining. The suspects had been regularly mining the banks of Kubbukkan Oya in Monaragala, Malwathu Oya in the Madu area and Hada Oya reserve.
Police also arrested sand miners in Mullaitive, Adal Aru in Kalawanchikudi and Mau Ara in Sewanagala. STF personnel from Udawalawa, Buttala, Ganehspuram, Galle and 10 Kanuwa camp carried out the raids. The arrested persons have been handed over to police stations with the seized goods to carry out further investigations and legal procedures.
