Green belt project launched from Wellawatte: Beaches go green

Students of Presbyterian Girls National School, Dehiwala were among the participants in the green belt project .

Sri Lanka Coastguard (SLCG) of Waruna camp, Wellawatte implemented The Green Belt Project, a tree plantation programme at the beach from Wellawatte extending towards the Southern coast recently.

Over 52 coconut, 78 moodilla and 80 wetakeyya saplings were planted with the participation of the Coast Conservation Department, local community and 50 schoolchildren from Presbyterian Girls National School, Dehiwala.

The project was initiated by the Navy in line with the government's development projects to keep the beaches clean and green to attract more tourists while ensuring a hazard free and attractive beach.

Lieutenant Commander Siri Sudasingha of SLCG made a presentation and a lecture for schoolchildren on the importance of planting trees along the coastal belt.

SLCG high ranking officers, Coast Conservation officers , Presbyterian Principal, teachers and students participated in the programme.
