Child patients suffer for want of CT scanner

By Don Asoka Wijewardena

Many inpatients and clinic patients of the Peradeniya Sirimavo Bandaranaike Children’s Hospital are severely affected for want of a CT Scan machine as the one that is there has stopped functioning. Doctors therefore find it very difficult to diagnose diseases.

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has notified the Director General Of Health Services of the problem at meeting yesterday, the GMOA revealed.

GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr. Nalin Ariyaratne told The Island that a new CT Scan machine was installed at the Peradeniya Sirimao Bandaranaike Children’s hospital six months ago. After a few days some technical faults developed in the machine.

When contacted Peradeniya Children’s Hospital Director Dr. Jayabandu Herath said that when the machine developed technical faults, he informed the DDG (biomedical Unit). Then, some biomedical engineers visited the hospital and repaired the machine. It had been in working order for about three months before coming to a standstill.

He added that the hospital had to refer all patients to other hospitals to undergo CT Scan tests.
