Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka requested the public to check the star ratings of the CFL bulbs before buying them to avoid substandard cheap CFL bulbs. The minister said that the star rating system introduced by the ministry indicates the efficiency level of the CFL bulbs.
The minister was participating at the launch of "Today for Tomorrow" energy saving programme at the BMICH yesterday.
He said that the ministry would shortly introduce recycling measures for CFL bulbs to prevent environmental hazards by the mercury contained in them. He said that steps would be taken to prevent importation of substandard environmentally unfriendly CFL bulbs into the country.
The minister also said that local producers of CFL bulbs are encouraged and given necessary facilities by the ministry. He said that the Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA) is conducting spot raids and imposing fines on producers of substandard CFL bulbs in the market through a recently established flying squad. He said that as a result of the promotional campaign carried out by the ministry, CFL bulb usage has exceeded incandescent bulb usage in the country.
