Sri Lanka’s first electric speed train from the Colombo Airport to Fort is expected to be commissioned by end of 2012 by a Malaysian based company. The train would bring a passenger from the Arrivals and Departures Lounges of the Airport building to Fort in 25 minutes and a special railway station would be set up near Fort which would have access to the Pettah Bus terminal and Maradana Railway Station and two main roads.
‘Airport Express’ Air and Rail Company (Pvt ) Ltd would be building this project and they have received government clearance for this landmark Public Transportation System Project.
The total investment for the project would be around RS. 60 billion making it the biggest private funded project in Sri Lanka.
An official form the company said that their next target is to extend this rail link to Gampaha from Maradana and subsequently to the Southern Railway line.
Investors are looking at building a four star hotel, shopping complex, Hyper-mall, Multiplex Cinema, a spiral Viewing Tower, City Hotel, a Conference and Convention Center, Food Courts, Bowling Alley , Game Arcades and a Health centre which consists of all types of Spas, Salons, Saunas, and Ayurvedic garden in this rail station in Fort.
This would be on a 32-storeyed Tower.
