Staggering 33 pc of water unsafe for drinking

By Ifham Nizam

A staggering 33 per cent of the water samples of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board collected by Public Health Inspectors in all districts, including Colombo, were unsatisfactory and not safe for drinking, says a senior medical official.

Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Paba Palihawadana told The Island yesterday that laboratory testing had proved that out of 2,000 odd samples taken from different parts of the country, 33 per cent were not satisfactory.

However, Dr. Palihawadana said that collection had been done by PHIs in areas where there was a high incidence of water borne diseases.

Dr. Palihawadane said the situation was worse in the North Western, North Central and Uva provinces.

National Water Services and Drainage Board, Additional General Manager, (Policy and Planning) D. N. J. Ferdinando told The Island that he was a bit confused about the tests and they would like to have the exact details thereof.
