President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said that the bottle necks that impeded the implementation of Nilwala Project in Matara would be removed soon.
The President was speaking at a meeting with officials over the implementation of Nilwala Project at Temple Trees yesterday.
The project officials said the agriculture sector in the Matara district has been affected by a high level of salinity .
They also said that this situation has also affected the potable water.
They pointed out that people in the Matara district are faced with a threat of floods due to lack of a proper drainage system.
The President was of the view that Sri Lanka should implement an irrigation scheme like the Mariana barrage in Singapore to avert salination.
He was of the view that such projects will help avert destruction of lands by sea water and floods.
The officials explained to the President the ongoing irrigation projects in Dediyagala, Batuwita, Aparekka and Uruwa which were aimed at controlling the floods.The President stressed the need for protecting forest reserves and environment of the district when this project is implemented.
Ministers Nimal Siripala de Silva, Basil Rajapaksa, Dullas Alahapperuma, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, S.M.Chandrasena, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Parliamentarions Sanath Jayasuriya and Hemal Gunasekara and Secretary to the President Lalith Weerathunga were also present.
