The Flying Squad of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has been temporarily suspended by Mayor A. J. M. Muzammil who has directed the Internal Audit to take over its functions.
The City Father told The Island that the Flying Squad was not functioning properly at all. They were inefficient and even had gone to the extent of threatening individuals and ‘holding back’ files instead of investigating.
The Flying Squad officers pick and chose whom to investigate and punish those who were not in favour of them. The head of the Flying Squad was found intoxicated while on duty and the complaint was not investigated, the mayor alleged.
He said that the unions too had wanted an appointment to meet him to discuss various issues pertaing to the Flying Squad, who were not performing their duties in a proper manner due to pressure from top government officials. Muzammil asked: "Under these circumstances, what is the purpose of having a flying squad?"
The Mayor said that he was not willing to allow various people to have their own way and would strengthen the Internal Audit to take over the functions of the Flying Squad.
Municipal Commissioner Mrs. Bhadrani Jayawardene was not available for comments.
