Bread price increased by Rs. 5

But CAA says no decision yet to increase gas, bread, powdered milk prices

By Lal Gunesekera

Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Chairman Rumy Marzook said that requests could be made any number of times for increases in LP gas, bread and powdered milk food, but the final decisions would be made by the CAA.

A source at the Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade told The Island that the CAA was in the process of obtaining certain documents pertaining to LP gas.

He said that the current price of a 12.5 kg LP gas cylinder of both Laugfs and Litro was Rs. 2,046, with the former requesting a 209-rupee increase and the latter a hike of Rs. 175.

The CAA had made no decision on the prices of powdered milk food and bakery products, sources said. However, All-Ceylon Bakery Owners Association President N. K. Jayawardene said that they had decided to increase bread prices by between Rs. 5 and Rs. 10 and all other bakery products by Rs. 3 and Rs. 6 with effect from today.

He said that they had taken into consideration the devaluation of the rupee, fuel price hikes, and in creases in transport costs and the prices of raw material (flour, vegetable oil, margarine, yeast) in effecting price revisions of their products.
