Due to a virus prevalent in the areas such as Udamapitigma, Kibulvila, Welgama and Keragala in the Dodampe electorate many paddy fields have been completely destroyed. In these areas B. G. 358 (Kekulu Samba) had been sown. Due to the viral attack destroying their cultivations farmers have appealed for state relief.
According to Yasantha Premalal a farmer he had bought seed paddy from agriculture service office in Dompe spending Rs. 1365 – but the entire cultivation was destroyed. Some agricultural officers who have visited these fields had been unable to provide them either solution or relief.
Spain Appuhamy said that the had never experienced such a disease which had destroyed the entire paddy cultivation. They did paddy cultivation by getting credit from banks. Under the situation it was difficult to pay back the loans and live and they should be provided with relief.
According to Hemali assistant officer to the Udamaptigama Agriculture office, still tests were being done and responsible authorities had been informed of it.
