Colombo is polluted with high pitched noise emanating mainly from horns of diverse motor vehicles.
The City Traffic Division had deployed special squads to nab the motorists who toot musical horns in violation of the Motor Traffic Act,
Assistant Superintendent of Police W. A. D. Dhananjaya told The Island yesterday.
He said the police would severely deal with the bus drivers who keep blaring their horns at bus halts until buses ahead of them move. Special squad personnel would be deployed between 8.00 am and 4.00 pm during week days to nab such offenders, he said.
In Pettah area 25 bus drivers had already been nabbed for blaring horns incessantly in violation of the anti-pollution laws, according to the police.
ASP Dhananjaya said that some motorists used musical horns of different pitches in blatant violation of the environmental laws. The Motor Act had defined that monotone horns should be fitted to vehicles.
Offenders are liable to a fine of Rs. 500 under the Motor Traffic Act.
