Milco’s new UHT plant up and running

By Lal Gunasekera

The Ultra Heat Treatment (UHT) plant from Finland, which has already been installed in Polonnaruwa, had produced 30 million packets of liquid milk in January alone.

The Chairman of Milco (Pvt) Limited Sunil Wickremasinghe told The Island that they placed orders for two such plants from Finland at a cost of Rs. 315 million each. He said that one had already been installed and the other was on the way.

He said that those plants were custom built to suit the climatic conditions of the country. The first UHT plant, after a trial run from December last year (2011) to January 15, was yet in the initial stages.

Various adjustments had to be made to the plant at Milco’s request, but producing UHT liquid milk, which could be kept without refrigeration for one month, unlike fresh liquid milk which had to be refrigerated, continued.

The UHT liquid milk comes in handy packets of various sizes and flavours and seems to be a favourite with consumers.
