Police said yesterday that they would guard the area of the Kataragama – Lunugamvehera road where gems were found by villagers.
Police Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana told The Island that the earth used to construct the road had contained gems and would be auctioned tomorrow (22) by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority.
According to him, the police curfew which was clamped over the area to maintain law and order had been lifted. The area was guarded by the police.
Meanwhile, the road had been closed to vehicles and people except for the residents until tomorrow (22) according to an order of Tissamaharama Magistrate Sanjeewa Ramyakumara.
He also ordered to suspend all construction and removal of earth within a radius of 1km from the area where gems were found.
