CEB engineers to hand over demands in writing today

By Ifham Nizam

The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers Union (CEBEU) will today handover letters to Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka and Ministry Secretary M. M. C. Ferdinando urging them to attend to salary and other issues that were taken up during a special general meeting of the union, last week.

The Island reliably learns that the engineers would spell out the alleged injustices meted out to the and on certain contracts given to private companies that would place them at an advantage vis-à-vis the Board.

CEBEU Media Spokesman Ajith Withanage told The Island yesterday that they had already taken up the salary ratio issue and they were strictly following the laid down manual in that regard.

He warned that failing to attend to their demands would force them to take strike action.

They had presently withdrawn from carrying out breakdowns and other duties. In other words they would attend to most duties at a snail’s pace, he said.

Withanage also said that several discussions were held with the relevant authorities regarding salary discrepancies. However, no proper responses had been received.

CEB Chairman, Anura Wijepala told The Island yesterday that the salary issue was with the Salaries and Cadres Commission, and its decision was awaited.

He said that he was not aware of the other issues as they would probably receive letters on such issues shortly.
