Some State agencies have made well paved highways into veritable death traps. One such agency is the Water Supply and Drainage Board, which often digs highways to locate water supply points, to provide consumers with new connections.
At least 50 sites have been dug between Maggona and Alutgama, along the main Galle - Colombo highway. However, a proper resurfacing of these sites have not been carried out. The result has been a string of accidents.
Recently a trailer toppled after traversing over a poorly patched surface, as the picture on this page shows. In some areas traffic is obstructed in dug out areas inconveniencing both motorists and pedestrians.
A resident of Maggona P. Arthur said the Water Supply and Drainage Board used heavy machinery to dig the roads. "In the Massala junction at least 100 cyclists have fallen into patched up pits,” he said. He warns that heavy vehicles could sink when they travel over the patched stretches.
