The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) losses for the 38 days of this year stand at a staggering nearly Rs. 55 billion, which is higher than the losses during all twelve months of the last year.
CEB Technological Union, Senior Engineer Assistant, U. R. K. Senaratne told The Island yesterday the government, particularly the power sector was losing such huge amounts due to deals disadvantageous to Sri Lanka.
The Island reliably learns that Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) monitoring the CEB, is not happy with the latter’s performance and has already recommended the use of renewable energy sources rather than thermal power.
CEB losses for 2011 was Rs. 30 billion and this years losses are expected to increase drastically due to the frequent breakdowns of the coal-fired power plant at Norachcholai.
Numerous efforts to contact the CEB Acting Chairman Anura Wijepala and Power and Energy Ministry, Secretary, M M C Ferdinando were unsuccessful. However, Power and Energy Ministry, Media Secretary, Dhanuska Ramanayake said that he was not aware of any losses.
