The European Union (EU) had pledged its support to the government for a four-year dengue control project. The Spokesman for the Health Ministry, W.D. Wanninayake said yesterday that the EU pledged Rs. 169 million for a Dengue Disease Surveillance Project (DDSP).

Wanninayake said a team of specialists headed by Prof. J. Gubler of the Duke University Singapore had arrived in Sri Lanka last morning and held discussions with officials of the Health Ministry. He said the visiting team had also included specialists from Heidelberg University, Umeå University Sweden, and Boston University USA.

The Programme was initiated following Cabinet approval given to Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena last week.

The aim of the Project is early identification of areas in which dengue reaches an epidemic stage and the formulation of a cost effective lab system for dengue treatment in Sri Lanka.

The Medical Research Institute (MRI) has been named the National Quality Assurance Laboratory (NQAL) and its services would be strengthened for blood sample testing for dengue patients.

The highest Number of dengue cases has continuously been reported from within the Colombo Municipal Council area. Therefore two hospitals have been identified for dengue patient care from within the city - Lady Ridgway Hospital for Children and the National hospital. The Homagama Base Hospital has also been identified for patient management under the DDSP.

He said the Project would cover the entire country starting from Colombo and its suburbs it would cover the entire country with the four years.
