Certain interested parties with hidden agendas are trying to cause panic among the public by spreading a rumour that there is a threat of bird flu to inconvenience the government, said Animal Production and Health Department Director General W K de Silva.
He said steps have been taken to identify such rumour mongers and take legal action against them. There is information about the involvement of certain NGOs in this false propaganda.
The Director General said the affected birds in a regional poultry farm had been subjected to investigation. Tests proved that there is no evidence of the H5N1 virus in them and people could consume chicken and eggs without fear.
He said adequate measures have been taken to prevent the import of chicken and eggs from countries affected by bird flu.
