While ensuring protection of the environment and giving more teeth to protect the wetland resources, the Central Environment Authority will shortly launch a programme titled ‘Wetland Auditing System and Wetland Crediting System’.
CEA Chairman Charitha Herath told a media briefing yesterday, in connection with the school quiz competition to mark the World Wetlands Day on February 2, that the competition will be conducted at zonal, district, provincial and national levels and will encompass 2800 government schools. One student representing grades 10 to 13 from each school can participate in the competition. Winners will receive trophies and certificates in the national event to commemorate World Wetlands Day.
Herath added that the objective of celebrating World Wetlands Day is to raise public awareness on the importance of conserving wetlands due to their high water retention capacity, biodiversity and the positive impact it has on tourism.
The wetland protecting ‘Ramsar Convention was signed in Ramsar, Iran in 1971, Bundala forest reservation, Madu River eco system, Kumana forest reservation, Anavilundawa and Vankalai reservation in Mannar are the wetlands that classified under Ramsar Convention in Sri Lanka.
CEA and the Department of Wildlife Conservation will join hands with CBL to spearhead an awareness campaign on the importance of conserving wetlands.
