Wilpattu to become tourist paradise

The Wilpattu national park will become a tourist paradise in the near future, Agrarian Services and Wildlife Minister S. M. Chandrasena told the Daily News.

Around 150,000 acres has been identified under a proposal to develop the national park in parallel to the Deyata Kirula programme.

The ministry has drawn up a plan to construct 11 tourist bungalows and 15 ground camps close to the Modara Aru, Malwatu Oya and Kala Oya, he said.

Minister Chandrasena recently inspected four blocks in the Wilpattu site with the participation of Parliamentarian Ven Ellawala Medhananda Thera.

Around 100 archaeological monuments belonging to 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th and 9th century BC had been found in the Wilpattu national park. They have been ruined by treasure hunters and natural causes. Due to terrorist activities, the authorities have failed to launch any excavation projects to find sites of archaeological value.

The minister said steps have been taken to fulfil shortcoming to make it a top wildlife sanctuary in the world.
