Now, tourists unhappy with military presence in Wilpattu National Park

by Subasinghe Bandara Our Saliyawewa correspondent

Wildlife and Agrarian Services Minister S.M. Chandrasena on Saturday (Sept 17) said that the need to withdraw Army and Navy detachments deployed in the Wilpattu National Park had been brought to the attention of the Defence Ministry.

Minister Chandrasena said that the presence of military personnel could be reduced due to the conclusion of the conflict in May, 2009.

The Anuradhapura District Minister emphasized that re-deployment of troops would entirely depend on national security requirements and shouldn’t in anyway undermine post-war defence strategy.

Minister Chandrasena was responding to a query what action the government intended to take in the wake of complaints by some tourists that presence of military personnel in Wilpattu had been a hindrance.
