To prevent pollution caused due to excessive use of polythene and plastic, people have been asked to hand over their plastic and polythene to waste collectors and recyclers and they can obtain cash for that waste, Central Environment Authority(CEA), National Post Consumer Plastic Waste Management Project Director, Bandula Sarath Kumara said.
He said that Plastic had become a part and parcel of daily life and analyzing several indicators it had been found that the demand for plastics in Sri Lanka for domestic use and export would grow rapidly in the future.
"The CEA is conducting more awareness programmes to increase the number of plastic and polythene collectors in the country, starting from schools and government departments," he said.
He added that recycling will enable to make a healthier environment by giving sustainable solutions to the pollution caused by plastic.
He also said that annually Sri Lanka imports 200,000 metric tons of raw plastic materials and exports only 30 percent of it. Around 70 percent is for daily use.
"We are encouraging recycling and in the future it will be a very competitive business," he said.
