The Power and Energy Ministry is taking measures to generate three percent of the national power requirement using alternative energy sources to meet the 100 percent electricity supply target by 2012 end.
Ministry sources said that within a short period of one and a half years, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has been able to add six percent of the national requirement reducing the area unprovided with electricity to nine percent.
According to the sources the “Grama Shakthi Project of the Sustainable Energy Authority is Cooking for the most suitable alternative energy source which is solar and wind power to provide to cover three percent of electricity where the provision of electricity through hydro and thermal power plants seems difficult.
Ministry sources said that two solar power plants have been established in Hambantota to provide 1250 KWs to the national grid. One of those plants opened recently and another 750 KWs solar power plant will be opened within a month. The Ministry also urged the public in areas still deprived of electricity to bring to notice their grievances to the officials of the Grama Shakthi Project to facilitate the provision of electricity and meet the 100 percent target by 2012.
According to the sources, the provision of electricity to Gampaha, Colombo and Hambantota districts is 100 percent. The extensions of the electricity in other districts including the North and East is accelerated to achieve the target.
