Public Relations Minister Mervyn Silva yesterday made another breakthrough in fighting vice when he accompanied a team of Public Health Inspectors in a raid on a warehouse at Biyagama Road, Kelaniya and helped seize a consignment of sugar unfit for human consumption.
The Public Health Inspectors said that on inspection they had found that the white sugar was mixed with dirt as it contained the sweepings packed and dispatched to the market.
The minister said the inferior quality sugar had been purchased by unscrupulous confectioneries for making sweet-meats and in some cases it was sold to illicit breweries to manufacturekasippu".
Ordering the Health officials of the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha to destroy the consignment of sugar, Minister Silva said that all such stores would be checked to ascertain whether food unfit for consumption was being stored.
The minister also ordered the officials to hold an inquiry and submit a report to him.
